a Pocket Orchestra performing

Symphonic music, distilled.

Orchestra

What is a Pocket Orchestra?

An orchestra small enough to take anywhere.

We are a “pocket-sized” ensemble of top musicians based in Belgium. You can think of us as a distilled, conductor-less, and thus highly portable version of a full symphonic orchestra.

We illuminate music for audiences through connecting masterpieces in the symphonic/opera repertoire with other disciplines in the humanities. We want to bring people closer to music by illuminating its relevance to our everyday lives, emotions and the things we think about daily.

What we do

We take orchestral music out of the concert hall.

We perform original arrangements of the symphonic repertoire and present them without a conductor.

A Pocket Orchestra has less decibels than a bigger one, but at the same time it offers a much more intimate experience.

The transparent nature of this group will give you direct access to the architecture of these masterpieces; you can see the inner workings and bask in the glory of their harmonic and timbric richness.

The possibilities

Music that can go where an orchestra cannot.

A Pocket Orchestra can perform in cultural centers, museums, festivals, educational projects and other spaces where a full orchestra will not fit.

Our programmes can be presented as concerts, or developed around a particular space, audience or theme. The small format allows us to work across disciplines and in places where orchestral music is not normally heard.

Who we are

Professional musicians from Belgium’s leading orchestras.

a Pocket Orchestra brings together musicians from Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Liège Philharmonic and La Monnaie, among others.

The ensemble is flexible, conductorless and built around original arrangements that allow large-scale repertoire to be performed with a small group of players.
